Dr. Yohannes Seifu Berego’s academic journey began in his home city of Hawassa, Ethiopia, where he completed his early education at the Adventist School in Hawassa City. After excelling in his elementary and junior schooling, Dr. Yohannes proceeded to the Hawassa Daniel Comboni Comprehensive High School, laying the foundation for his future academic and professional success.

After completing his secondary education, Dr. Yohannes enrolled at Hawassa University, where he earned a B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Sciences in 2010. His early academic pursuits demonstrated an affinity for science, particularly in health-related fields, which would later play a central role in his career. His strong academic performance and dedication to his studies led him to pursue higher degrees at the same institution, marking the beginning of his path into environmental science and health.

Upon completing his B.Sc., Dr. Yohannes continued his academic journey at Hawassa University, further expanding his knowledge and expertise. He earned a Master’s degree in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Health in 2017, where his research centered on understanding the impact of pollutants on ecosystems and human health. During this time, he began developing a passion for environmental toxicology and wastewater management, two fields that would define his career.

In 2019, Dr. Yohannes broadened his skillset by completing a General Master’s in Public Health, which provided him with a wider lens on health issues and the relationship between human health and environmental factors. This dual focus on environmental health and toxicology led to his PhD in Environmental Toxicology, which he is currently pursuing at Hawassa University, with a particular focus on the treatment of agro-industrial wastewater from coffee berry processing.

He currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Health at Hawassa University, where he teaches, mentors, and supervises graduate students. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Yohannes has been entrusted with the role of Chairperson of Academic Standards and Quality Assurance at Hawassa University since August 2024, further solidifying his leadership within the academic community.
