Dr. Choi continued his academic pursuits by earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama in May 1992, with a dissertation titled "An Investigation of Coal-Water Slurry as a Compression Ignition Engine Fuel" under the mentorship of Dr. Stuart R. Bell.

After completing his education, Dr. Choi took on various roles in academia and industry. Notably, he served as a Research Fellow at the Mining & Mineral Resources Research Institute, University of Alabama, from September 1990 to August 1991.
