Artem Khalatov’s academic journey began in the former Soviet Union, where he was born on December 14, 1942, in the city of Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He pursued his education at the Aviation Institute (Technical University) in Kazan, Russia. In 1967, Khalatov earned his MSc in Aeroengines, specializing in the aerothermodynamics of aeroengines. His dedication to the field led him to continue his studies at the same institute, where he embarked on a PhD program focused on the heat transfer and hydrodynamics in supersonic nozzles. By 1970, he had successfully completed his PhD, marking the beginning of a remarkable career in engineering thermophysics.

Khalatov’s professional career is distinguished by his extensive contributions to academia and research institutions. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor, Senior Lecturer, and Associate Professor at the Aviation Institute in Kazan. In 1979, he transitioned to the Kiev Institute of Air Forces in Ukraine as a Full Professor. By 1983, he had joined the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, where he currently serves as the Head of the Department of Thermogasdynamics. Throughout his career, Khalatov held various prestigious positions, including Deputy Director for Research from 1986 to 1993.

In addition to his primary roles, Khalatov has held part-time and visiting professorships at several esteemed institutions worldwide, including the National Technical University of Ukraine, Cardiff University in the UK, and the University of Utah in the USA. He has pioneered research in swirling and vortex flows, heat transfer augmentation, and innovative gas turbine blade cooling techniques. Khalatov’s work on cooling microelectronic devices and developing new aerothermal vortex technologies has also gained significant recognition. His innovative approaches have led to advancements in vortex heat exchangers and technological vortex chambers, further cementing his status as a leading expert in his field.

Khalatov’s publication record is impressive, with 31 books (28 in Russian and 2 in English), around 800 published papers and conference presentations (over 100 in English), 19 textbooks and tutorials, and over 130 patents. Notably, he was awarded the First International NATO Scientific Committee Award in 2002, and he has received three scientific awards from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1992, 2003, and 2023. His contributions to gas turbine engineering earned him the State Award of Ukraine in 2010, and he was honored with the Yu. Gagarin Medal by the Russian Aerospace Agency in 2002.

Khalatov’s international recognition includes being named an Honorary Professor at Cardiff University in 1996 and serving as the W.W. Clyde Chair Visiting Professor at the University of Utah in 2004. His significant contributions to science and technology were further acknowledged when he was named an Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine in 2018.
