She continued her academic pursuit by obtaining a Master's degree in Environmental Science from Bangalore University in 1998. Subsequently, she earned an M.Phil. degree in 2001 from Kuvempu University, Shimoga, where her research focused on municipal waste management and its environmental impact on Bhadravathi city.

Her academic journey reached its pinnacle with a Ph.D. from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, in 2006. Her doctoral research, titled "Removal of dyes and phenolic compounds from wastewaters by Fe(III)/Cr(III) hydroxide," showcased her early commitment to environmental science and sustainability.

Dr. S. Sumithra's professional career spans over 12 years, including significant roles in academia and research. She started as a Lecturer at Tamil Nadu College of Engineering in 2007 and later at St. Peters Engineering College in 2008.
