Maxim (Maksim) Svetlov began his academic journey with a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Udmurt State University, Russia, in the year 2000. Building upon this foundation, he pursued a Master's degree in Biochemistry at the same institution, completing it in 2002. His academic pursuits took a significant leap as he delved into Molecular Biology for his Ph.D. at the Institute of Protein Research, RAS, Russia, achieving this milestone in January 2010.

Following the completion of his Ph.D., Maxim Svetlov embarked on a dynamic career path. He served as a Senior Research Scientist at the Institute of Protein Research, Russian Academy of Sciences, Pushchino, Russia, from 2010 to 2015, contributing significantly to the field under the guidance of Dr. Alexander Spirin.
